Mechanical Design Engineer

Our client is a leading OEM manufacturer based in Tyne and Wear and are now looking to appoint a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their expanding team. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will be responsible for designing and drafting mechanical products and systems using Solidworks as well as being responsible for the change management and the whole product data management process.


The Role:

You will support with technical validations of designs by working with the Manufacturing Engineers and liaise directly with customers and suppliers to identify and introduce product improvements across all machines built at the site. An element of R&D will be required to drive innovative product improvements. Other duties and responsibilities will include: -

  • Design, develop, verify and maintain whole machine 3D models and modifications to existing designs to keep in line with current legislation, continuous improvement and cost reduction exercises.
  • Ensuring completion of final design documentation.
  • Management CAD data within the Solidworks PDM environment.
  • Prepare drawings and diagrams for hydraulic devices and installations.
  • Review and assist in the effective closeout of the live top 10 product improvements.
  • Collaborate with neighbouring departments including manufacturing engineering, quality, operations and product support to support the successful introduction of your designs into production and the field.
  • Selection of appropriate materials and material treatments for safety critical steel fabrications and pinned joints.

About You:

  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelors Degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical engineering, Control Systems Engineering or related field.
  • Experience of designing mechanical structures using welded fabricated steel members, cast members and bushed and pinned joints is essential as well as 3D modelling using Solidworks and designing hydraulic control and drive systems.
